Mother’s Day

I am thankful for all the mother’s who are and have been active participants in their child’s life to help guide and direct them in this complicated world we live in.  I am especially thankful for single mothers, just like my mother, Thelma Jones.  She is the one who inspired me to write A mother’s words of wisdom.  From my heart to yours. Building within. My mother taught me the importance of building within—with important values and principles to live by.

As a mother myself, I still cannot comprehend the hard work, love, patience, and understanding it takes to take on the responsibility of raising three small children under the age of 5 mainly by yourself.  My mother had some support, but she knew that it was up to her to do majority of the work and not pass the buck.  My mother had a choice, and by the grace of God, she chose to handle her responsibility.  She did not know what she had in store, just some money and a few suitcases to embark on a new chapter in her life…

I am honored, Thelma Jones, to say that you are my mother.  You always look for opportunities to teach us about life and to help us be responsible for the life we have.  You always look for opportunities to call and check on me to see how my family is doing..You never pushed your ideas or words of wisdom on me…You always reminded me that I have a choice in life, and that it is my life…that it is our life as your children.

Thank you Mother for honoring the symbol of motherhood.  You are a conscious parent.  The choices you made were out of love and not deceit or hate.  You tried your best to do the best for us.  I look forward to Mother’s Day, which is in a few days, and everyday that we are blessed to have you in our lives…Your heart is so big, and it shows in your actions to those who’s lives you touch.

I love you mom,

Live the life that pleases you and not another

We all have to live our own life and hopes are that we live our life responsibly meaning that what you do not only affects you, but can have a direct and/or indirect affect on others. It could be drinking and driving (we have probably all heard of everyone else but the driver being critically injured or dying), cursing in front of your children who later learn that cursing is a healthy way to relieve emotions (including nurses who curse in front of their patients…I have heard and seen it), or calling someone outside his or her name demeaning another individual in front of others or in private (I have a name for a reason…use it). Children quickly pick up on these habits and more…they tend to idolize their parents because we are who they mainly hear and see. They look to us to teach them the right way. so we are not shocked when they curse their teacher out or police..or even judge…

It is out of our control to please others with our life. I am not here to please someone else. I am here for my own journey. I have seen where pleasing others causes personal and professional setbacks, lots of money being spent, plastic surgeries, etc.) Do know that if you are trying to please someone, do not be surprised if the things you do are never “good enough”. You may want to ask– why am I trying to please another person and is that person trying to live his or her life through you?

It is okay to take the advice of those you trust…However, do not let someone’s voice be louder than your own. What you do today, you cannot re-live tomorrow…only do better, hopefully.

Make today great!

What I say to you, I say to myself?

Too many times individuals want to give you advice on how to live your life, yet they are not practicing it themselves. I think back to one of my jobs as an educator for individuals with chronic health conditions with an insurance company. Nurses provided education and support via phone calls and mailings. This was before I obtained my certification as a diabetes educator, and I would hear others try to talk to their clients about healthy eating and the importance of exercising, yet it was obvious that they were not living that life. I have had others talk to patients about quitting smoking, yet they smoke themselves. They would go on and on about how smoking is bad for your health and give resources on how others could stop smoking. Now, some may say that educating others is just a job, but it is more than that. Education should represent what you believe and value. It is a manifest of who you are on the inside. This is not to think that why change if others will not or call someone an “imposter”. The change is for you and not the other person. Deciding not to change something because of what someone else is or is not doing is a poor excuse. Would you not agree?

I do not want to come across as judging…It is a fact that individuals look for others who have gone through what they are going through to motivate them and show them how to change their life. They look for positive role models, not someone who just talks…but someone who acts on what he or she says. I just wonder if that person could see you now..be the fly on your wall, would you be the motivation they need or thought you were?

Until next time,
