The 3–4 minute breaks between class periods in Public Schools are not just a part of the American Rush-Rush lifestyle; they actively contribute to it and potentially harm students’ well-being.

Hi there,

As we gear up for the new school year, I hope you had a fantastic summer filled with relaxation and self-reflection.

I started this season by talking about school breaks and their role in feeding the rush-rush American lifestyle. I didn’t learn about the limited breaks between class periods until last year when my children transitioned for a short time from online public school to brick and mortar. The whole experience was truly a culture shock for my then-6th grader. Students had four minutes to get things out of their locker/return things, go to the bathroom, wash their hands, drink water, and maybe even pop a snack in their mouth.

But, my son rarely made time for the bathroom, given the limited break period. At the time, I couldn’t help but see another spoke in the cycle of pain and was astonished that it was coming from the school, where many children spend most of their days for nine months or longer.

What health habits are our children sacrificing to align with limited breaks between class periods?

Until we address the root cause, and I mean consistently as needed, sprouts will continue to grow.

Listen more to my thoughts on limited breaks and feeding the generational cycle of pain from fast foods, chronic health conditions, and mental distress. As always, I would love to hear your take.
